28 Jun. 2025 Host Rotary Exchange Students for a day! Jun. 28, 2025 8:00 a.m. - Jun. 29, 2025 9:00 a.m. Melody & Paul St. John and their Scanex students will be stopping overnight in St. Paul on Saturday, June 28th, arriving at 8:30 a.m. and departing on June 29th at 8:50 a.m. We cannot guarantee arrival time for Amtrak on Saturday though. Any host family should host at least 2 students to avoid going through a background check. Students will need to have a good bed or even a sofa to sleep on overnight, they will need to wash clothes and potentially pick up a few items at Walmart or Target to pick snacks for their ongoing Amtrak trip (train food is expensive). They will be traveling to Chicago, Niagara Falls, Boston, Washington DC and possibly New Orleans before returning to Los Angeles. All of the students are long term Rotary exchange students and currently live in CA, AZ, UT, NV, but will be finishing up their experience after the trip. The students want to see the Twin Cities and families have their choice of what to show them in the time that they have the students in their homes. Previous examples have been the Mississippi River overlook in St Paul, going to Culver’s (a Midwestern fast food restaurant and trying cheese curds and they have heard about the restaurant), the Mall of America (many are interested in at least seeing it) , the George Floyd site, the Mpls Sculpture Garden, the Capitol, Minnehaha Falls, the Hmong market or as Shelly offered, possibly going swimming at her home if the weather is good. The kids are tired when they arrive because depending on the trains out of Glacier Park, they may have sat upright in a chair for 48 hours. Host families need to just make their suggestions as to what they are willing to do over 24 hours. It is fun and can be tiring, but it is fun to hear about their exchange year on the west coast and likewise it is fun to show off the Twin Cities. The kids are very appreciative and they share their stories on the trip as to what they saw or did, which is part of being en exchange student.
